When I was a kid in elementary school my parents would drop my big sister and me off at Star Light skating rink for a few hours on Saturday and it was there that we learned how to roller skate. They would play red light green light, limbo and a number of other games that us kids loved to play. By the time I was in fifth grade Star Light's name became Zenith and nicknamed "The Z". They would have all night lock ins that everyone would go to; they were so much fun. As we got older we began go skating at Fun Plex with our friends; everyone who grew up in southwest Houston can tell you some childhood memory about the Fun Plex skating rink. Unfortunately as I got older finding a good place to go skating and have a good time became more and more difficult. The Z closed down and Fun Plex is now run down and they are not a many other places to skate in southwest Houston.
However, on October 21, 2010 I went to the Almeda Skating Rink in southeast Houston. Club promoters who usually host parties at downtown clubs hosted “Houston’s Cascade Party 3” on the flier it said it was from 9 pm – 2 pm with ladies free before 10 pm.
But it started at 10 pm and of course they held the line for a while so despite getting there at 9:45 we didn’t get in until 10:25. I talked my way out of us paying which I shouldn’t have had to do due to the circumstances, but after that I had no complaints. The skates were free all night and I couldn’t wait to get my skates on and get on the rink.
The DJs for the night were DJ Young Streetz and DJ chose. They both did a great job of playing mostly Texas and Louisiana hip hop, big radio hits, and old 90s R&B hits that took me back to my days at Fun Plex and The Z. I had a blast; I skated all night and from 2 am-3 am the skating rink became a dance floor. If you like to skate and you live in Houston the cascade party is the place to be; I can’t wait for part 4.
